For each week you are resident in Edinburgh, you should allow yourself the following sums of money to cover your expenses during the academic year:
Living in University owned self-catering room

Please note, we also have single person studio apartments self-contained flats. The weekly rate for these flats is about £103 per week which includes personal contents insurance. All bills for heating, electricity, hot water etc would be in addition to this rent.

It should be stressed that these figures are all approximate and vary according to your personal lifestyle.
Textbooks and stationery
The fee does not include the cost of text books for core and options courses so you should budget an additional amount for this required expenditure. Students are provided with a printing allowance but will be required to pay for additional printing once this allowance has been exceeded.
Clothing
Students from hot countries should include an additional amount to cover the costs of purchasing warm clothing in the first year of their studies.
Registration
All non-Commonwealth students (other than EU, US and Japanese Nationals) over the age of 16 who have been admitted to the UK for a period longer than six months may be required to register with the police. The fee for registration is currently £34 per person.
Travel
Costs for travelling outside Edinburgh should be taken into account when drawing up a budget.
Childcare
If you have any pre-school children that require childcare facilities, please check the costs for inclusion into your budget. Childcare in the UK is very expensive.
Further costs
Non-EEA students who need to extend their Leave to Remain in the UK are now subject to a charge. The cost is £357 for postal applications or £565 for using the Public Enquiry Office. Read more about this charge:

Students who are coming to study in the UK for more than six months will be required to obtain either a visa or entry clearance for immigration purposes. The cost for a visa or entry clearance certificate is currently £99.
Examples
Here are some examples of approximate costs of what a student might be expected to spend when studying at Edinburgh:
- A single postgraduate student should allow, for a twelve month period, approximately £10,000.
- A visiting student here for the autumn semester should allow approximately £3,500 for a University self-catering flat.
- A married postgraduate student with a family (2 adults and 2 children – no childcare) living in accommodation in the private sector should allow a minimum of £14,000 for a twelve-month period at the University of Edinburgh.
