University home Privacy & CookiesAccommodation
The University offers accommodation in three residences specifically designed for postgraduates: Mylne's Court, Richmond Place and Roxburgh Place. It also offers single-person studio apartments at South Bridge. Please note all accommodation is subject to availability.

Map of the different accommodation locations available to postgraduates. The numbered locations are described below.
1. Mylne's Court
Perhaps one of the most attractive University residences, Mylne’s Court is situated towards the top of the Royal Mile, close to Edinburgh Castle. Built in the 1690s, it has been restored to 21st century standards, without losing any of its period charm. Much of Mylne's Court has been redeveloped as flats for groups of up to five students.
2. Richmond Place
This modern residence is just a few minutes walk from the School. Built in a traditional residence style, most of the rooms are positioned on either side of long corridors, with kitchen and living areas at either end.
3. Roxburgh Place
This small, new residence accommodates 59 postgraduate students in five 12-person flats, sharing comprehensive kitchen and bathroom facilities. Located a few minutes walk from the School, next to Richmond Place, all rooms are larger than many in University accommodation.
4. South Bridge
Opposite Old College, this small development of single-person studio apartments is ideal for students looking for more privacy rather than sharing a flat. Each studio includes an open plan kitchen/living room/bedroom unit, with an en-suite shower room. The development is located just a few minutes walk from the School.
Private accommodation
Many PhD students prefer to live in private rather than University accommodation, particularly if they are accompanied by partners and families. If you are interested in renting privately, there are a wide range of flats and apartments in close proximity to the School. To help in your search for privately-available accommodation, the links below may be helpful. Equally, the School is sometimes notified of properties that are available for rent, for example, when current students leave Edinburgh, or if an alumnus has a property to rent.
