Introduction
The Accounting and Finance Group consists of 22 academic staff, with a number of Visiting Professors and Associates from practice. The Head of Group is Professor Seth Armitage and Group members are evenly split between the sub-areas of accounting and finance.
Teaching
The Group is responsible for a number of industry-accredited four-year undergraduate honours degrees. These comprise the MA in Accounting and Finance (circa. 350 students), MA in Business Studies and Accounting (c. 80 students), MA in Accounting and Law (c. 10 students) and the MA in Economics and Accounting (c. 50 students).
The Business School also teaches a number of one-year Masters programmes - MSc in Accounting and Finance (c. 60 students), MSc in Finance and Investment (c. 75 students) and a new MSc in Financial Management. The Business School is recognised as a Programme Partner by the Chartered Financial Analysts Institute and as a Centre of Excellence by the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment.
There are c. 25 PhD students supervised within the Group.
Research
Group research interests are varied and include accounting for everyday life, asset pricing, banking, behavioural finance, corporate finance, corporate governance, financial markets, financial reporting, management accounting, market-based accounting research, public sector financial management.
Weekly research seminars are held during semester time, with both visiting and internal speakers. Details of our forthcoming and historical seminar programme can be found on our events page.
The Group has a research centre, the Institute of Public Sector Accounting Research (IPSAR) the aim of which is to identify, develop and promulgate principles and practices for best accounting in the public sector.
Two journals are edited by members of the Group - Accounting and Business Research (Pauline Weetman) and Financial Accountability and Management (Irvine Lapsley).
Databases
The Group benefits from numerous databases including Datastream, ThomsonOneBanker, CRSP and COMPUSTAT through WRDS, and several other datasets. Subscriptions are kept under review and funds are available to subscribe for new databases as required.
