Themes
Within this group, staff work on the following themes:
-
Strategies for internationalisation that look at the relationship between the process of globalisation and the strategic development of firms. (Carr, Harris)
-
Work on the convergence and divergence of management practices across countries, including studies of headquarters-subsidiary relations and whether HRM policies and practices tend towards standardization or localization. (Harris, Pudelko)
-
The specificity of inward and outward investment in the emerging markets of Sub-Saharan Africa, China and India, including a large scale study for UNIDO in Africa. Members of the group also conduct work in the new EU member states of Central Europe and have completed studies that look at the next steps in the privatisation processes of the post-communist transition countries. Recently completed large comparative studies in China have looked at the interplay of industrial growth with science and technology. (Henley, Shen, Carpenter, Liu, Woodward)
-
Strategic foresight (managerial perceptions of environmental uncertainty, prospective sensemaking, prefactual analysis, risk and scenario planning).
-
Competitive strategy (competition policy on corporate strategy, environmentalism and information warfare in corporate strategy).
The group has strong research links with CASE, Poland; Zheijang and Tsinghua Universities and CASS, Beijing; HSE and UNU-WIDER, Finland; EIASM, Brussels and Harvard Business School.
