Working alongside more than 150 students from over 10 nationalities, I collaborated with multicultural teams from six universities, including the University of Amsterdam, the University of Sydney, Nanyang Technological University Singapore, and the National University of Management Cambodia, to innovate business ideas addressing pressing global challenges.
Through classes on Entrepreneurship, Design and Systems Thinking, and Cultural Intelligence, I broadened my international perspectives and understanding. These classes fostered a meaningful environment for cultural exchange and learning, which guided the development of our business solution and pitch. Together with my team, The Runners, we focused on limiting the uptake of vapes and minimizing vape addiction for the Health, Wellbeing, and Changing Societies global challenge. We exchanged unique perspectives, navigated challenges, and celebrated successes as we efficiently completed assignments while having fun. In addition to the knowledge gained from classes, I also formed long-lasting friendships that will propel my career development and integration into the international job market.
We also participated in several cultural visits that supported my integration into Vietnamese culture and enhanced my cultural intelligence. This included visiting the Ho Chi Minh Fifth Military Zone Museum, wood carving at Au Lac, and a company visit to Trungnam EMS. Furthermore, we engaged in traditional activities during a day trip to Hoi An, such as cooking traditional Vietnamese foods, making tea at Tra Que Vegetable Village, creating pottery at Than Ha Terracotta Park, and weaving sleeping mats. Seeing the work of locals was inspiring, and their work ethic was very impressive. I met many friendly locals throughout my trip, all of whom were enthusiastic to welcome us. Through them, I had some of the most fun, spontaneous adventures, such as riding a bull! I not only gained a deeper understanding of Vietnamese history and culture but also took with me unforgettable experiences.
Beyond the programme, we had free time in the evenings, which I spent exploring more of the beautiful, culture-rich Vietnam with my friends. I watched the International Fireworks Festival and the Fire and Water show from the iconic Dragon Bridge. I saw breathtaking landscapes from the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills, the mesmerizing lanterns on the Hoi An boat ride, and the view of Da Nang from Marble Mountains. I also visited culturally significant sites such as My Son Sanctuary and the Linh Ung Pagoda. Moreover, I travelled to the ancient capital of Hue, where I visited the Imperial Palace, Lang Huong Xu Incense Village, and an abandoned water park. My favourite experience was snorkelling by My Khe Beach, where I swam with fish along the beautiful coral reefs. The food and drinks were all unique, and trying them was just as exciting as the experiences! This included Banh Mi, Banh Ca, Bun Cha, salted coffee, egg coffee, and more. I would love to visit Vietnam again and regularly keep in touch with the friends I made from INCiTE—we are already planning to reunite!
I am grateful for this memorable experience and highly recommend it! I found out about this programme from an email from the University of Edinburgh, but you can also find more information on the Study and Work Away Service (SWAY) website.
Through the programme, I have broadened my cultural awareness and feel confident and comfortable seeking new international experiences and integrating into new cultures. I have formed valuable friendships and unforgettable memories, making the two weeks feel too short! Along with my enhanced skill set and gained knowledge, this experience will advance my personal, academic, and professional development, and I would do this programme again in a heartbeat!
