With the future of work identified as a subject of interest to so many of our alumni, we were delighted to welcome award-winning business writer Julia Hobsbawm as our speaker for our annual Global Alumni Day in June.
The Nowhere Office

In her latest book, The Nowhere Office: Re-inventing Work and the Workplace of the Future, Julia looks at the new challenges presented by remote working and the opportunities it presents.

About Julia Hobsbawm

She is not advocating 'no' office—but the book is so-called as it's an anagram of now and here and here and now.

Describing herself as 'an observer and a synthesiser of trend, who loves organisational behaviour', she brought together views from a variety of sources, providing much food for thought as to where we go from here.

Julia said: "Very simply, we must not go back and fantasise that if everybody was back in the office, it would be great, or that everybody working hybrid is somehow osmotically going to be great.

"The moment we are in now is absolutely ripe for embracing. I want there to be change in the workplace. I want us to reconfigure and recast."

During the event and in response to questions, she explained what this could look like.

We had alumni, students, and staff joining us in-person in Edinburgh, and the event was also live-streamed to alumni across the world, with people registered to join us from over 30 countries across Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Africa.

Attendees could post questions before the event, during the event in the auditorium, and also virtually via Zoom, which led to a truly global event.

In addition to the event being held in Edinburgh, some of our Alumni Regional Leads hosted virtual events for their areas—including Italy and in Latin America—with other events (both in-person and virtual) planned for the summer months.
