These talks are aimed at developing your career goals and knowledge as well as assisting on your academic journey. We encourage you to attend even if you're in your first year and not yet thinking about your post-PhD goals. Part of the aim of the Doctoral Society is to support every Business School PhD as you reach for your future goals.

Alex Acland; Odgers Berndtson; Partner & Head of the UK Education Practice London


Alex Acland is a Partner at Odgers Berndtson and is Head of the UK Education Practice. He specialises in recruiting for top roles within academia. Alex has spoken to executives at top UK universities to help them succeed in their academic careers and now he’s coming to speak to us. Alex will be help us to understand what skills and experience we need to develop early in our careers to enable us to be considered for top academic positions in the future. What do good candidates look like? What are schools really looking for?

Understanding what potential employers are looking for is relevant for everyone but for those not considering academia Alex will briefly touch on the current industry outlook for us all. For over 50 years Odgers Berndtson has delivered executive search, assessment and development to varying businesses and organisations. Alex predominantly focuses on recruiting leaders of schools, business schools and universities, and has been actively involved in the sector since 2001. He has worked with a wide range of clients including Cass Business School, Cranfield School of Management, Eton College, INSEAD, Radley College, The Purcell School and the Universities of Southampton, Edinburgh and Oxford.
