The Carnegie Trust offers a number of scholarships each year to academically excellent candidates who are intending to study on a PhD programme at any University in Scotland.

Overview

A research proposal in any subject area will be considered, and a minimum of 15 scholarships (across all Scottish universities) will be available for those starting their doctoral studies in 2022–23.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a First Class Honours undergraduate degree from an eligible Scottish university, and must be in a subject related to the field of the proposed doctoral studies.

To be considered all applicants must have applied formally for admission to a PhD programme of study commencing in September or October 2022 at the University of Edinburgh, must have identified a potential supervisor, and also made a scholarship application all by the University's internal closing date of 31 January 2022.

Please be aware that if you are in receipt of a Government-funded Research Studentship, Research Council Award, or comparable scholarship you will not be considered for this opportunity.

Value

The scholarships cover tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, and a research expenses allowance. The awards are tenable for three years for full-time study, and up to six years for part-time study.

The tenure period may be extended to a maximum of 42 months (or 84 months for part-time students), but only when a case for such an extension has been made at the time of nomination and approved by the Trust as part of the award.

Award Announcement Date

The University will review all applications and submitted nominations to the Carnegie Trust. Applicants will be informed if they have been nominated by 28 February 2022, and the Carnegie Trust will inform nominated applicants of the final outcome by the end of May 2022.
