Dr De Smedt obtained his BSc and MSc in Information Systems Engineering, as well as his PhD in Applied Economics at KU Leuven, Belgium. He is currently the Dixons Carphone Lecturer in Business Analytics.

His research is embedded in information systems and machine learning, and his interests include:

  • Process mining and modelling
    • Including: decision mining, declarative process modelling and mining, mixed-paradigm process models
  • Sequence mining
    • Applications: session stitching, behavioural analysis, student behaviour (learning analytics)
  • Attribution modelling
  • Analysis of word-of-mouth (eWoM)

His research has been published in numerous well-known journals such as IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, Knowledge-Based Systems, IEEE Transactions on Services Computing, Decision Support Systems, Expert Systems with Applications, and Business & Information Systems Engineering, as well as top conferences such as the European Conference on Machine Learning, the International Conference on Business Process Management, and the International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering.
