Roles and Responsibilities
Marian is currently the Director of Research of the University of Edinburgh Business School.
He also serves as a Senior Editor for Information and Organization and is an editorial board member of Organization Studies. In addition, he is a member of the Edinburgh Futures Institute and a co-director of the Centre for Culture, Accounting and Society (CAS). Marian is also an affiliate member of the Usher Institute.
Background
Marian studies how organizations and institutions respond to social problems, crises, and societal transformations, with a particular focus on social innovation. His research examines technologies of quantification, including numbers, indicators, and visualizations, as active tools that shape how problems are defined, responses are organized, and organizations are held accountable. Drawing on organization theory and accounting research, his work explores how knowledge, innovation, and accountability are produced and practiced in responses to social challenges, with the aim of generating actionable insights for contemporary management and policy.
Marian's research has been published by outlets such as Journal of Management Studies, The Accounting Review, Organization Studies, Accounting, Organizations and Society, Research in the Sociology of Organizations and Cambridge University Press. His research has also been featured in media publications such as the Financial Times, Stanford Social Innovation Review and The Conversation. Marian regularly presents his work in national and international institutions, including the Universities of Cambridge, Glasgow, HEC Paris, Innsbruck, LSE, Manchester, Oxford, University of Southern California, Warwick and WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management.
Marian has taught at the undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA and PhD level. In addition, he has designed and delivered executive education courses for senior civil servants in the area of strategy execution, performance management and financial management. He currently supervises one PhD student.
