Background

Having practiced as a lawyer since 1992, Tom is a specialist in negotiation, mediation and dispute resolution. He set up his negotiation consultancy in 2003 combining his experience gained as a litigation lawyer with his in-depth specialist and academic knowledge of the negotiation and dispute resolution processes and since then has worked with companies and organisations based in the UK, Europe, Canada, the Middle East, and South-East Asia primarily in the oil & gas and shipping sectors.

He has lectured in Negotiation on the University of Edinburgh Business School's MBA programme since 2008 and previously also led the Negotiation Module of the LLM in International Dispute Resolution at the University of Dundee School of Law between 2009 and 2017. Tom was awarded his research-based PhD from the University of Strathclyde School of Law for his work into effectiveness in legal negotiations.

As well as his lecturing and consultancy work, Tom provides commercial mediation services having completed his mediation qualification and certification at Northwestern University in Chicago in 2005, where he went on to gain experience working with some of the top commercial mediators practising in the U.S at that time. Finally, Tom retains a small legal consultancy practice providing specialist legal services for a small number of commercial and public sector clients.
