Overview

Using the cases of the Chinese Social Credit System, and corporate ESG ratings – he will reflect on how the onslaught of big data and Artificial Intelligence - combined with the erosion of trust in citizens and their rationality (spurred by behavioural economics) – have led to a proliferation of performance measurement devices (such as ratings, rankings, labels and scores) which rely on big data analytics for behavioural governance of citizens and corporations. To entice change in behaviour, such devices frequently rely on self-interest orientation, competitive drive and reputational concerns – of citizens and corporations. Afshin Mehrpouya will reflect on the implications of this shift for corporate responsibility, public goods and citizenship.
