Background
PhD (Edinburgh,UK); MSc in Operational Research & Management Science (Edinburgh, UK); MA (Russia).
Prior to her current position as the Personal Chair of Societal Aspects of Credit, Professor Andreeva worked at Bank of Scotland and held the prestigious ESRC post doctoral fellowship. Her research explores credit risk of individuals and SMEs, focusing on financial vulnerability, fairness, and the social impact of credit. She applies advanced statistical and AI/machine learning techniques to Big Data, particularly Open Banking transactions, and works closely with industry and policymakers to improve access to fair and sustainable credit.
In addition, Galina conducts research into the psychology of debt and financial behaviour, including the intersection between gambling related harms and financial difficulties. She uses survey data and Open Banking transaction records to uncover behavioural patterns, financial stress indicators, and links between harmful gambling and problem debt. More broadly, she is increasingly interested in the emerging field of health and finance, and how financial vulnerability, behavioural biases and economic stress connect to health outcomes.
Galina publishes in top academic journals including Risk Analysis: An International Journal, European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of Financial Stability, Financial Accountability and Management.
Her research has a strong practical focus and involves practitioners as partners, sponsors or data providers. She has led and collaborated on numerous research and consultancy projects in credit risk and risk analysis.
Galina has contributed to policy debates on credit and AI, including evidence to the UK Parliament Treasury Committee (2025), reports on consumer duty and financial vulnerability, and a study for the European Credit Research Institute on data sharing and alternative information in credit markets.
Press coverage of her work includes The Guardian, the BBC, Sky News, the Daily Record, The Times, The Herald, the Edinburgh Evening News, The Scotsman, The Sun, the i newspaper, the Scottish Daily Mail, and the Sunday Post.
