Why did you choose to study at the University of Edinburgh Business School (UEBS)?

I chose to study at UEBS because of its excellent reputation, innovative programmes and lively academic community. The expert professors and the Business School's dedication to pushing boundaries in business education matched my goals. The historical and culturally rich surroundings also added to the appeal, making it a great place for learning and personal growth.

What was it about the degree programme that particularly attracted you?

I was drawn to the MSc in Accounting and Finance because it balanced theoretical knowledge with practical use. It offered a well-rounded curriculum that connected academic learning with real-world applications.

The inclusion of industry insights, hands-on learning opportunities and interactions with professionals in the field were especially attractive, promising to equip me for success in finance and accounting.

Your career

Can you tell us about your career before and after graduating?

Prior to my MSc, I primarily worked as an auditor in Thailand. After graduation, my career expanded significantly. Whilst still engaged in auditing, my role underwent expansion within the UK finance sector, extending to include the Channel Islands.

I took on more strategic responsibilities, collaborating closely with financial stakeholders to shape financial strategies in different UK organisations.

The transformative part was my international experience. Using skills from my studies, I worked abroad, gaining insights from diverse financial landscapes and cultures. These experiences enhanced both my professional skills and adaptability across cultures.

My Masters enabled me to shift from a purely technical role to a more strategic and impactful position.

How did your degree prepare you for your career?

My degree prepared me for my career by giving me a solid grasp of accounting and finance. The programme focused on critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication – crucial skills for complex financial settings.

Engaging with industry professionals and hands-on projects bridged theory and practice, making me ready to tackle real-world challenges from the start of my career.

What notable changes has your degree enabled you to make in your professional or personal life?

Professionally, my degree enabled me to shift from a purely technical role to a more strategic and impactful position within accounting and finance.

Personally, the experience of studying and living in a new country broadened my cultural horizons and enhanced my adaptability. These changes collectively enriched both my career and personal growth.

What are the changes you have been able to make in your chosen field, of which you are most proud?

I'm most proud of contributing to financial decision-making beyond numbers. Integrating technical skills with strategic insights, gained during my studies, helped me offer recommendations that drive growth and sustainability.

How did your studies at the Business School help you to make those changes?

The Business School's well-rounded education equipped me with diverse skills. The emphasis on critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making laid the groundwork for my transition into strategic roles. Collaborative projects and exposure to industry leaders fine-tuned my ability to apply theory to practice, enabling me to contribute significantly.

What key things that you learnt at the Business School do you still rely on today?

Analysing complex situations, strategic thinking, and effective communication are skills I use each day. Adapting to change and thriving in diverse teams, learned during my studies, benefit my professional interactions. Ethical considerations from the Business School guide my decisions in complex business situations.

Course highlights and advice

What are your best memories on the programme?

I particularly enjoyed when we delved into the impact and implications of accounting and auditing standards from various perspectives. We explored how these policies are viewed by regulators and management, and it was enlightening to understand their differing focuses.

This experience provided me with valuable insights into how to adapt to real-world scenarios and comprehend the consequences of these standards in my work. This practical understanding has been incredibly beneficial in my professional life, allowing me to navigate situations with a broader perspective and make informed decisions that consider the different viewpoints involved.

What one piece of advice would you give to current students and recent graduates?

Embrace every learning opportunity wholeheartedly. Your studies at the Business School are not just about acquiring knowledge but also about honing your mindset and skills. Engage with diverse perspectives, actively participate in discussions, and seek out hands-on experiences. The connections you build and the skills you develop during this time will be your most valuable assets as you navigate your career journey.
