The Principal's Medals celebrate the achievements and dedication of staff and students who have delivered exceptional service or support to the University or the wider community, and who have strongly demonstrated the University’s values. Recipients are nominated by fellow students and staff members and the winners are chosen by the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Peter Mathieson.

Edinburgh Hikers

Kelisha Pandaram was recognised for her efforts in setting up the Edinburgh Hikers, an inclusive and community-building society that connects students from diverse backgrounds through nature, wellbeing, and shared stories.

Kelisha was nominated by a host of fellow students and numerous academic staff at the Business School including Dr Jennifer Yule, Senior Lecturer in Marketing. She told us more:

“Kelisha formed Edinburgh Hikers to help international students bond over something that was outdoors, screen-free, didn’t cost much and yet could benefit them all in so many ways.

“I thought it was such a lovely idea as it shows such an embrace of something that’s special to both Edinburgh and Scotland and gave students the opportunity to explore a part of the countryside that they otherwise wouldn’t have done.

“Being out in the countryside particularly hills with views of the landscape are very helpful aids to positive mental health - something that’s so important for the well-being of our student community.”

Following her graduation, Kelisha received further recognition of her achievements at the Business School’s Graduation Reception in the Playfair Library, and was congratulated by the Dean, Professor Gavin Jack.

Upon receiving the award, Kelisha said:

“Receiving the Principal’s Medal is a profound honour. As a South African scholar, I have always believed that cultural diversity is one of humanity’s greatest assets, and cultural intelligence is the compass that allows us to navigate it with respect and wisdom.

“My life’s mission is to build lasting bridges between the Global North and the Global South, creating spaces where ideas, opportunities, and people can connect meaningfully and flourish together. The University of Edinburgh has shaped that mission, and I will carry it forward with both conviction and compassion.”
