The course

Why did you choose to study at the University of Edinburgh Business School (UEBS)?

The University of Edinburgh Business School has a worldwide reputation for excellence, great links to business networks, and a vibrant and diverse student community. I was keen to study the newly introduced MSc in Global Strategy and Sustainability in a fantastic city.

What was it about the degree programme that particularly attracted you?

After reviewing sustainability programmes across the UK, I chose the Global Strategy and Sustainability programme at the University of Edinburgh Business School because the curriculum is comprehensive and well rounded, with a good blend of theory and practical application.

In addition, the focus on both business strategy and sustainability and the practical experience available through company treks, the consultancy project and networking events suited my career aspirations.

Before applying, I spoke at length with the Course Director and a senior lecturer to gain a deeper understanding of the curriculum. The time and support they provided was invaluable, and I really appreciated their willingness to engage with me early on. This experience set the tone for a supportive and enriching year ahead.

Your career

Can you tell us about your career before and after graduating?

Before commencing the MSc at the University of Edinburgh Business School, I worked as a Bid Manager within the business development department of a national social enterprise, Turning Point. The organisation supports individuals with complex needs including mental health, substance use, learning disabilities and forensic histories.

I have always been deeply interested in sustainability, and as an increasingly vital area within businesses, including the health and social care sector, I was eager to move into a sustainability focussed role.

Whilst studying full-time for my Masters at Edinburgh, I continued to work part-time for Turning Point. This was certainly challenging to balance, but it’s something I am particularly proud of. Since graduating, I have transitioned into the new role of Sustainability Officer where my focus is on developing our organisational approach to net zero.

My degree gave me the confidence to lead environmental strategies in my organisation.

How did your degree prepare you for your career?

The degree provided me with a solid foundation in key sustainability concepts, such as systems thinking, and their implementation within business. This learning supports me in my role where I can draw upon both the theoretical and practical insights I gained. I am now actively involved in key decision making and development of my organisation’s environmental and sustainability approach.

Masters of Change

What notable changes has your degree enabled you to make in your professional or personal life?

In my professional life, my Master’s has enabled me to pursue a career in sustainability, enabling me to step into a newly created sustainability role within my organisation.

On a personal level, I have stayed in Edinburgh after completing my degree and I'm very happy to now call the city my home.

What are the changes you have been able to make in your chosen field, of which you are most proud?

I’m proud of the contribution I’ve been able to make to my organisation’s net zero strategy as well as my involvement in carbon accounting. I work closely with internal teams and external sustainability specialists to develop effective and informed strategies. I am also responsible for driving employee engagement around sustainability and environmental initiatives. It’s an exciting and evolving journey to build understanding across multiple stakeholder groups.

How did your studies at the Business School help you to make those changes?

Completing the MSc has given me the confidence to support and lead environmental and sustainability strategies within my organisation. The knowledge and skills I have obtained through the degree have, without a doubt, enabled me to pivot my career and move into this role.

What key things that you learnt at the Business School do you still rely on today?

I learnt many key skills which I rely on today including critical thinking, problem solving, verbal and written communication, leadership, team-working, time-management and analysis.

Course highlights and advice

What are your best memories on the programme?

I particularly enjoyed the sustainable business consultancy project, where I worked in a team with three other students, to support a Scottish company with their social life cycle assessment. This project provided me with valuable real-life insights into sustainability opportunities and challenges within a business.

A particular highlight was visiting the company in the Scottish Highlands with my team. We were welcomed by the company and enjoyed a fun and informative day of learning and networking. The project also paved the way for me to work with the company on a client sourced dissertation.

What one piece of advice would you give to current students and recent graduates?

Try to embrace the opportunities offered to you - even if they may seem a bit daunting at first. Engage with your fellow students and lecturers, and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Student Development Team, for example, career support, alumni workshops and networking events. These are excellent ways of expanding your network and learning from others in your field.

It’s also important to make time to explore Edinburgh. It’s a great city with lots to see and do, so make time to enjoy the wonderful experience. A personal favourite is Soderberg bakery - their pastries are a must!
