Opportunity
Technological unemployment, growing income disparity and rising environmental challenges require a new approach to entrepreneurship. One based on addressing inequalities and the environmental impacts of economic development. To examine responses to these issues, Peking University approached us to create a five-day Global Business Immersion Programme for MBA students from their Guanghua School of Management.
Approach
Embracing the theme of Social Entrepreneurship and Leadership, we created a programme that combined faculty-led sessions, guest speaker engagements and visits to local enterprises.
In creating the programme, we consulted with Peking University at key design stages. By taking on board feedback and suggestions from this process, we were able to refine content and materials, resulting in an inspiring and creative learning experience.
The first run of the programme was so successful that Peking University returned and the programme ran for a total of six years, exploring themes of social or purpose-driven entrepreneurship, leadership, and sustainable business policies and practices.
Impact
Between 16 and 45 students attended the programme annually over six years.
Faculty-led interactive lecture sessions offered the latest thinking around critical areas including digital entrepreneurship, alternative economic models and the emergence of new organisational forms. Group work then saw students applying new learning to local case studies. These centred on Chinese organisations pursuing the kind of disruptive entrepreneurial innovation at the programme’s heart. Presenting its findings, each group benefitted from class and faculty feedback.
The result was practical learning: exposure to best practices and to new ways of approaching and challenging entrepreneurship. This emphasis on real-world learning – on strategies and thinking that could be applied back home – was something the students especially valued.
Guest speakers and company visits included key figures and players from Scotland’s business community. Thanks to the high level of English-language skills our cohorts possessed, we were able to deliver this programme entirely in English. We are, of course, also experienced in sourcing skilled translators and interpreters as required.
A cultural experience
A full social and cultural component accompanied each programme. This included traditional Scottish cuisine – enjoyed in striking, exclusive University locations – and whisky tastings alongside bagpipe and ceilidh workshops. We also organised University accommodation for all participants.
The view from the classroom
I love this place, please let us stay here longer.
A perfect mix of presentations from both academia and practitioners. This programme provided a comprehensive understanding of the concept in theory and practice.
This programme is out of my expectations. Thank you!
I would consider starting up my own business which aims to give a better life in my hometown and make money from it. This programme has given me confidence to make money with social enterprise.
