"It was a great honour, not to mention a bit of a surprise."
What made you choose to study at the University of Edinburgh Business School?
"I am a born and bred Edinburgh girl. At the time I applied to the Business School I was running my own business here in Edinburgh so logistically it was always going to be an Edinburgh institution. Why did I decide to do an MBA at any point in my career? I felt that it was important that I kept up with the latest thinking to ensure that I could continue to lead and grow my business, armed with the latest knowledge."
What are your memories of studying at the Business School?
"I thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 years. Just being back in an academic environment was very rewarding. By the time I got to year 3, however, with my dissertation to fit in to a very busy work life, I couldn't wait to get to the end!"
What's the one thing you think current students need to develop or learn before entering the modern workplace?
"People management skills are vital for a successful business operation. It is hugely important to hone your interpersonal skills."
What key thing that you learnt at the Business School do you still rely on today?
"I was very surprised at how many students had experience of only one discipline and realised how important it is in business to give people access to varied and broad-based opportunities. Also, the honing of interpersonal skills is vital."
Proudest work-related achievement to date?
"Building my IT Services Business over 20 years to a scale that saw a turnover of over £50 million, a workforce of over 1,000, and a substantial outsourcing operation in India."
