Are you a new student coming to the Business School in September? Here are some of the top locations to look out for when you arrive according to current student, Sherry (MSc Banking Innovation & Risk Analytics).

The Business School

Of course one of my favourite places on campus is the Business School! The School regularly hosts lectures, themed events, and networking opportunities which allow students like me to connect with industry professionals and gain insights beyond the classroom. I find these experiences incredibly valuable for both my academic and career development.

Beyond scheduled events, the Business School also offers plenty of study spaces. There are areas for group discussions and casual chats where students can learn from each other. Or, for those who prefer quiet study, there is a silent study room that’s exclusive to Business School students. I also really like the on-site café on the Lower Ground Floor for grabbing a quick bite to eat or a coffee before class. Whether I’m attending a lecture, working on a project, or catching up with friends, the Business School always feels like a welcoming space to learn.

Moray House Library

Moray House Library is another great place to study. Although the main University Library is very close to the Business School, it’s often crowded, and finding a seat can be quite difficult. So, as an alternative, Moray House Library is my preferred option. It’s located near my accommodation, O’Shea Residence, which makes it very convenient plus it has a calm and peaceful atmosphere with plenty of space. I find the extra space helps me to stay organised and concentrate without being distracted for long periods of time. It may not be as busy or popular as the main library but that’s exactly why I love it - it’s a hidden place where I can truly focus and be productive!

The Meadows

The Meadows is one of the best places to go to relax. It’s only a few minutes’ walk from the Business School so I often go there with friends when we need a break. At the beginning of spring, the park is filled with beautiful cherry blossoms which are worth seeing! And when the weather is nice on weekends or between classes, the park comes alive with people walking their dogs, playing sports, having picnics, or sitting and enjoying the sunshine. The green landscapes and the joy of spending time with friends makes The Meadows a special place for me. It always lifts my mood and brings me a sense of peace.

Pleasance Dome

The Pleasance Dome is the place to go if you’re looking for fun events. It’s where the University of Edinburgh Students Association host a variety of social activities. One of the most memorable events I joined there was a Ceilidh, which is a traditional kind of social with Scottish music and dancing. It was my first time learning the steps so it was not only fun but also a great way to meet new people. I highly recommend it if you get the chance! I also attended a Halloween party there which was Squid Game themed. Everyone dressed up, played games, and enjoyed the lively atmosphere - it was definitely one of the most unforgettable memories of my postgraduate life! In addition to larger events, the Pleasance Dome also has a bar where students can grab a drink and take part in pub quizzes. They also have pool tables, making it a great place to unwind after a long day of studying.
